One of SWMLC's newest preserves is in St. Joseph County – the beautiful Coon Hollow Preserve.  SWMLC partnered with the Fabius Township Citizens Coalition (FTCC) and created this preserve to protect wetlands along scenic Coon Hollow Road. It was identified by the FTCC as a critical natural and cultural resource that needed to be safeguarded when the owners decided to sell.
Purchasing this property involved a broad-based effort between local government, non-profit organizations and businesses, with strong community involvement. Many of the private donations for the purchase were made in memory of the late Judy Johnson, a former president of the FTCC.
Coon Hollow Preserve is comprised of an impounded segment of the Kerr Creek and encompasses a relatively pristine wetland and adjacent wooded slope at the corner of Ferguson and Coon Hollow Roads in Fabius Township. The headwater marshes of the preserve contain a multitude of wildflowers and birds. Great blue herons, sandhill cranes, and wood ducks nest and feed on the site. The property also has historical significance, as it is the original site of the Coon Hollow from which the road was named.
Coon Hollow Preserve is open to the public. It is a place for the public to enjoy wildlife observation, photography and environmental education programs.
Directions: From US-131 south of Hoffman Road take Coon Hollow Road west. Turn south on Ferguson and west on Chase Road.
