Join us in exploring the crazy world of galls! Round, fuzzy, or polka dot, these parasitic insect homes on plants are a fascinating ecological interaction that’s happening around us all the time.
During this event, we’ll hike Chipman Preserve to observe and collect galls. We’ll learn about the animals that live in galls and their various strategies for survival.
Not only are galls ecologically interesting, they’ve also been used for hundreds of years to make ink. So, we’ll end our time together with a hands-on demonstration of how to make ink out of oak galls.
Additional info:
Dogs are typically welcome at SWMLC preserves, but we ask that you leave your furry friend at home for this guided hike and workshop.

SWMLC’s Office is located in a beautiful house that was generously donated to us by the Chipman Family. It is located one driveway west of Chipman Preserve, on the same side of the street.

Park in the staff lot
The driveway is shared with a private residence – our office is inside the gray two-story house on the left. Pull in the shared driveway, go straight forward, through the open gate, and turn to the left. After exiting your car, head toward the yellow pole barn where you will see a sign directing you to the office by way of a footpath. Please use the entrance off the deck.
