Natural Features
The prairie fen along McCoy Creek has long been recognized as one of the great botanical treasures of Berrien County. Prairie species like rattlesnake master, prairie dock, and prairie dropseed find their niche in this rare wetland community. The shrubby wetlands along the perimeter of the wetlands offer good cover for a variety of wildlife such as yellow warblers and catbirds.
Story
The property was first protected by The Nature Conservancy and transferred to SWMLC in 2014. The preserve is within the city limits of Buchanan and borders city land where there has been a history of collaboration for natural areas management. The Friends of McCoy’s Creek Trail have long looked after the stream flowing through the preserve and helped establish a trail system to connect into the preserve.
